Coder Oupatient-F/T

Department: PT Financial Services
Location: Rio Rancho, NM

Job Summary and Scope

As assigned Code outpatient and day surgery records for the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance with federal regulation according to diagnosis, operation, and procedure using ICD-9-CM/ICD 10 and CPT-4 classification system. Ensure adherence to Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures.

Essential Functions: 

  • POLICIES AND PROCEDURES - Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs
  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops.
  • Identify and assign preliminary codes for outpatient records for the purpose of reimbursement, research and compliance with federal regulations according to diagnosis, operation(s), and procedure(s) using ICD-9-CM, PCS, ICD-10, HCPC,  and CPT
  • Research and compliance with federal regulations according to diagnosis, operation, and procedure using ICD-9-CM/ICD10CM and CPT classification system
  • Abstract statistical data for discharge records using hospital's abstracting system
  • Perform data entry for determining correct DRG
  • Perform monthly quality assurance audits on coding for compliance purposes
  • Maintain departmental reports and records; collect statistical data for administrative and regulatory purposes
  • Attend technical and administrative meetings; participate in committee functions; participate in hospital-wide activities and committees within the scope of this position or as directed
  • Enter Charges as needed.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education/Experience

Education:  High School Diploma or GED

Licenses/Certifications: (one of the following)

  • CCS - Certified Coding Specialist
  • RHIT - Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
  • RCC - Radiology Certified Coder (RCC)
  • CPC-H - Certified Professional

Work Experience: 

Preferred Educational/Experience Requirements:

Associates Degree in, Health Information Technology with Certified Registered Health Information Technician, prefer 2 years’ experience.
